I'm essentially an optimist, and I'm here to help people find hope by encouraging them to love and accept one another. More than anything, I love humanity. My only requirement for a friend is that you desire to be friends with me, because no matter how different we are, we can always appreciate and learn from one another. I want to have the chance to learn from everyone and be a friend to everyone, to always be that person you can go to when you have problems.
My life changed this year when I went to college and realized that I struggle with feelings of depression and isolation. I have had to fight myself on a daily basis to stay optimistic and enthusiastic about life—and I could never have made it this far without the generous love of people who support me when I can't support myself. This is the kind of love I envision as Christ shining through living people, and having received such an incomparable gift, I want to pass it on. I want to learn about people and touch lives on an individual basis, so this sustaining love can keep spreading.
In the context of a career, I want to take that concept further, learning about other cultures and groups of people so that I can help build peace on a worldwide level. As humans, we may not always treat each other as well as we could, but I really believe that if a mutual friend brings enemies together and helps them see one another as worthy of love, we can achieve something truly astounding.
If I could devote each day to fostering in any small way a sense of harmony and peace among communities, I would consider my life a success. I would gladly give up a permanent home if I could be a citizen of the world, traveling and seeing life through ever-changing eyes, being the common ground between neighbors. I want to love and to be loved, always giving so that others can have what they need, both physically and spiritually. In a sense, I wish I could be a professional student who is always conducting cultural studies, combined with a nomadic humanitarian worker who lends a hand wherever necessary.
Frequently, the men and women who make the most difference to the world are the quiet ones who simply try to see everyone as individuals worthy of love, rather than as parts of a faceless mass. These people become beloved leaders and symbols of peace because of their great concern for each person taken as himself or herself. I have always wanted to make waves and change the world, but it took years for me to realize that the greatest change I can hope to effect is by spreading individual ripples of love that swell over my lifetime into something visible and quantifiable.
